Although grammar is important when teaching English, it is also important to teach ELLs which words go with which other words.
Remember a COLLOCATION is an expression of two or more words that go together. Collocations “sound right” to native speakers, but are difficult for English Language Learners who lack the native speakers intuition.
Collocations – Verbs and Nouns
Many folks feel that they are easier to learn when taught as a topic:
Here are some that go with daily routine:
have a shower
clean your room
begin work
have lunch
leave work
go home
meet friends
watch television
go to bed
Or to teach using just one verb
Here are some examples using make:
make noise
make a mistake
make plans
make the bed
make a telephone call
make dinner
make friends
make an effort
