Hi everyone!
Happy May… I can’t believe we are heading into the last weeks of school. My last big language unit for the year is a Compare and Contrast unit using vocabulary from Text Features and Graphical Devices (visual information such as: diagrams, timelines, and flowcharts.
We are using these graphical devices and text features as our vocabulary that goes with our compare and contrast language. This is the chart we are using that lists some of the major graphical devices and as we compare different books and texts we are adding their covers to the graphical devices they contain.
On the right side are student drawn examples of other text features we are finding.
I started my unit using the term “graphical devices”, as you can see here in this picture of my sentence frames, but I changed the term to ‘text features’, which is more commonly used and understood.
I started working on this unit after I read this great article from Reading Rockets titled,
Click here to go to that article.
After I read it, I decided to adapt it to an ESL lesson that would go for several weeks.
I chose Compare and Contrast, as the language function and it fit perfectly.
It was the language function I wanted to end the year with.
From there so many of the details and resources I needed were outlined in the article.
It is turning out well.
I will keep you posted and share a song I
wrote that goes with the unit in my next post
about text features and graphical devices!!
