6 Tips to Support English Learners

Tips to Support English Learners

Are your ready for 6 Tips to Support English Learners in the Mainstream Classroom? As English language learners (ELLs) inhabit more and more mainstream classrooms, it is essential that teachers are aware of the 6 ways to support these students in their learning.  It is essential for teachers to understand the best ways that they can support ELLs within the classroom. Here are 6 ways to make sure your ESL learners feel supported and have the best possible chance at academic success:

Tip #1: Provide Plenty of Opportunities for Comprehensible Input

This means providing activities that use language that is simple enough for the student’s level, but also rich enough that they can benefit from it. Examples include reading stories aloud, engaging in roleplay activities, or having conversations about shared interests.

Do use Visual Aids

Visual aids can be incredibly helpful for ESL students since images are often easier to process than words alone. Consider using visuals like charts, graphs, or videos to supplement texts when teaching complex topics—or simply put-up posters with new vocabulary words so students can easily refer to them later on.

Tip #2: Assign Appropriate Tasks

When assigning tasks or activities, consider carefully how well these tasks match each student’s individual level. Give easier tasks where possible for those who need more support so that they do not become overwhelmed or embarrassed if they cannot keep up with what everyone else is doing; this will also help avoid frustration on behalf of both teacher and student when it comes time for group work too! Do provide extra time.  Many ESL students need additional time to process information and respond appropriately; allowing extra time for tests or assignments can help them succeed without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Additionally, you may want to provide extended reading periods or allow students extra time to complete notes during lectures if needed.

Tip #3: Provide One-on-One Assistance

When possible, try providing one-on-one assistance to your ESL learners during instruction and/or while they work on an assignment or project; this way they can take their time working through difficult concepts without feeling embarrassed or judged by their peers. If there are particular areas where an ELL may struggle considerably more than other students then offering one-on-one support tailored specifically towards their individual needs can be extremely beneficial; this could take place before or after class times depending on availability and scheduling logistics etcetera.

Tip #4: Make Use of Technology

Technology is an excellent tool for supporting ESL students; not only does it allow you to reach multiple modalities, but there are also many apps that are specifically designed for English language learners! You can also help them by exposing them to different listening materials, and by helping them practice often.  Look into applications that teach basic grammar rules and pronunciation guidelines—as well as websites that offer online dictionaries so you can look up unknown words quickly and easily during class discussions or activities—to help support your students’ learning experience.

Tip #5: Incorporate Authentic Materials

Incorporating authentic materials whenever possible—such as books written by native authors or magazines featuring content related to current events—can help fast-track the language acquisition process by exposing your students to real-world examples of native English usage while stimulating critical thinking skills at the same time!

Tip #6: Be Open & Understanding

Finally, it’s essential that you create an open learning environment where all questions are welcome, and mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth instead of failures.  You can use a gentle and supportive tone when you talk to them. This will help ELs trust you.  Being understanding of cultural differences and linking the things you’re teaching to the student’s cultural backgrounds. This will help them understand better and expressing genuine interest in each student’s background will go a long way toward making everyone feel valued and supported in the classroom!

In conclusion, by implementing these 6 tips to support English learners alongside your other teaching practices you should find yourself well-equipped with everything necessary in order to help each student reach their full potential regardless of language proficiency!
