As a teacher, I know that you want your classroom to be an environment where English learners feel welcome and respected. As ESL teachers we know that nowhere is this task more daunting than when teaching students who are still mastering the English language. You create an inclusive learning atmosphere that also promotes respect while supporting students in their journey of language acquisition!
No matter what levels or backgrounds your English learners come from, there are some key strategies you can use as a teacher to encourage a respectful learning space for all. In this blog post, I will give you 9 concrete steps you can take to develop and maintain a supportive and inviting classroom for your English learners.
1. Educate Yourself
First, new teachers should invest time in learning about the cultural backgrounds of their students. Read books, articles, attend workshops and also engage in professional development opportunities that focus on cultural competency and diversity. 2. Foster a Welcoming Environment for Your English Learners
Next, create a classroom atmosphere that embraces diversity and also promotes inclusivity. Display multicultural posters, flags, and artwork that reflect the backgrounds of your students. Celebrate cultural holidays, traditions, and achievements to demonstrate respect for various cultures.
3. Promote Dialogue and Open Communication
Encourage students to then share their cultural experiences and perspectives, too. Provide opportunities for students to discuss and also learn from each other’s cultures. Foster open and respectful communication, where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and asking questions about different cultures besides their own.
4. Incorporate Multicultural Resources
Use instructional materials, books, as well as resources that represent a variety of cultures and perspectives. Also, choose literature and texts that also showcase diverse characters and cultural experiences. This helps students see themselves and others reflected in the curriculum and fosters understanding and empathy, too.
5. Collaborate with Families of Your English Learners
Engage families in the learning process by inviting them to share their cultural traditions, stories, or artifacts with the class. Teaching cognates and including families to share cognates is a great way to involve families! (For more on cognates, click here to read my blog!) Encourage parents to also participate in cultural celebrations or presentations, too. Establish regular communication channels with families to address any concerns and ensure their cultural perspectives are considered.
6. Respect the Cultural Norms and Practices of English Learners
Be mindful of cultural norms and practices when planning classroom activities and interactions. For example, some cultures place a strong emphasis on respect for authority figures, while others encourage more interactive and collaborative approaches. Finally, adjust your teaching methods accordingly to accommodate different cultural expectations.
7. Address Biases and Stereotypes
Challenge stereotypes and biases that may exist in the classroom or within instructional materials. Foster critical thinking skills and encourage students to also question stereotypes and assumptions about different cultures. Create opportunities for discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion.
8. Seek Professional Development and Support
Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities focused on cultural sensitivity and diversity. Attend workshops, conferences, or webinars that also provide strategies for creating an inclusive classroom. Seek guidance from experienced colleagues, cultural sensitivity experts, or equity and diversity committees within your school.
9. Reflect on Your Own Biases
Finally, take time for self-reflection to identify and address any personal biases or assumptions you may have. Consider how your own beliefs and values may impact your interactions with students from diverse backgrounds. In addition, continuously work on developing cultural humility and an open mindset, too.
Remember that creating cultural sensitivity is an ongoing process. Indeed, it requires a commitment to learning, self-reflection, and building relationships with students and their families. By promoting cultural understanding and respect, new teachers can create a classroom where every student feels valued, respected, and included.

Lindsey: This book provides practical strategies for developing cultural proficiency in teaching. It offers guidance for understanding and addressing students’ cultural identities, experiences, and needs.
These are just some of the ways educators can foster an inclusive and respectful environment for English learners. From educating yourself to respecting cultural norms, policies, and practices, these strategies are some of the many ways to help ensure all students have access to equitable education in our classrooms.
However, I have found that there is so much more that can be done. It is crucial to continue having meaningful dialogue with English learners and their families in order to maintain an open line of communication. Don’t hesitate to also reach out for advice and support. Collaborate with your school district, family members, linguists, and other staff members. Openly discuss strategies on how best to approach multicultural resources when teaching English learner students.
