February Math Sentennce Starters

Just in time for a new month, I put together some February-themed math sentence starters for each grade level (K-5) that you can use in your math class during February. These sentence starters can help encourage student participation, reasoning, and communication of mathematical ideas while tying in February’s theme:

Kindergarten Math Sentence Starters

  1. “In February, I can count ___ hearts/flowers/etc. and say there are ___.”
  2. “When I look at this pattern of snowflakes, I see that ___.”
  3. “If I add two red valentines and one blue valentine, I get ___.”

Grade 1 Math Sentence Starters

  1. “If I have 4 pink hearts and I add 3 more, I now have ___.”
  2. “The number of snowflakes I see is greater than ___ but less than ___.”
  3. “In February, the number of days in the month is ___.”

Grade 2 Math Sentence Starters

  1. “There are ___ days in February, and I can divide them into ___ weeks.”
  2. “If I have 6 valentines and give away 2, I will have ___ left.”
  3. “February is the second month of the year, and the number of days in it is an even/odd number because ___.”

Grade 3 Math Sentence Starters

  1. “If I group 12 hearts into 3 equal parts, each part will have ___.”
  2. “February is a month with 28 or 29 days. This means ___.”
  3. “If I add 15 chocolate hearts and 8 candy hearts, I get ___.”

Grade 4 Math Sentence Starters

  1. “In February, the temperature dropped 7 degrees. If it was 15°F yesterday, it is now ___°F.”
  2. “I can divide a set of 24 valentines into 4 equal groups. Each group will have ___ valentines.”
  3. “If I subtract the number of days in January (31) from the number of days in February (28), I get ___.”

Grade 5 Math Sentence Starters

  1. “The area of a February-themed rectangle with a length of 12 units and a width of 5 units is ___ square units.”
  2. “In a leap year, February has 29 days. This is ___ days more than in a common year.”
  3. “If I multiply the number of days in February (28 or 29) by 2, I get ___.”

These sentence starters tie into math concepts like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and patterns, while giving students a fun, thematic connection to February. Have fun!
