Step 1: Start with a Visual Demonstration
To begin, I like to use the included Addition Boards – Making Numbers activity to show students how addition is all about grouping. These boards provide a visual reference, helping kids see the “why” behind the math. Perfect for introducing the concept or reinforcing it with struggling learners!
Step 2: Practice Addition with Hands-On Games

Next, I want to get my students playing:
- Add Those Numbers: A fast-paced, competitive game that builds number fluency.
- Make That Number: A creative activity where students practice forming numbers by adding.
These games are designed to make practice fun, so kids stay motivated while building their skills.
Step 3: Assess Addition Progress with Timed Tests
Once my students are feeling confident, I introduce the timed tests. These give them a chance to show off their growing skills and build speed. In addition, I use the included Student Score Bar Graph to track and celebrate progress—instant motivation!
Step 4: Extend Learning at Home
Finally, I send home the reproducible activity masters so families can join the learning fun. It’s a great way to reinforce skills and keep the practice going outside the classroom.
Why This Works
We know that frequent, focused practice through games and visual tools helps students grasp the concept of grouping and build fluency in addition. Furthermore, students will see math as fun—something they’ll look forward to rather than shy away from.
