There comes a point in every elementary math classroom when multiplication facts seem to take over! Am I right? Multiplication fact fluency takesa time and practice!
Some students are ready to zip right through them, while others are still counting on their fingers, skip counting, or trying to remember whether 7 × 8 is 54 or 56. 😊
And when it comes to multiplication facts, there really is no magic wand. Students need lots of practice before those facts become automatic.
But that doesn’t mean we have to drill them to death!
The good news? Building multiplication fact fluency doesn’t have to mean piles of worksheets or endless timed tests. With a little variety, repetition, and FUN, students can get the practice they need without multiplication becoming a chore.
Here are five easy ways to help students practice multiplication facts while keeping them engaged.
1. Turn Multiplication Fact Fluency Into a Game
Games are one of my favorite ways to practice multiplication facts because students get the repetition they need without feeling like they’re doing the same thing over and over.
And we all know what happens when you announce, “We’re playing a game today!”
Suddenly, everyone is ready for math. 😊
Partner and small-group games are especially helpful because students are solving facts, checking answers, talking about math, and practicing again and again.
2. Practice a Few Facts at a Time
Trying to master all the multiplication facts at once can be overwhelming.
Instead, break them into smaller chunks. Students might work on ×2 facts, then ×5, ×10, and so on.
As they become more confident, mix previously learned facts back in. This kind of spiral review keeps older facts fresh while students continue learning new ones.
Little by little, those facts start to stick!
3. Add Multiplication to Your Math Centers
Math centers are a great place to sneak in extra fact-fluency practice.
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel each week, either. Keep a multiplication activity or game in your center rotation and simply change the facts students are practicing.
This gives students consistent practice while allowing you to work with a small group or individual students who need a little extra support.
4. Let Students Practice Multiplication Fact FluencyWith a Partner
Sometimes multiplication practice is simply more fun with a friend!
Partner activities give students a chance to say facts aloud, explain their thinking, check each other’s answers, and learn from one another.
They also take some of the pressure off students who may not feel confident during whole-class fact practice.
Best of all, partner practice can be quick. Even 5–10 minutes can add meaningful repetition to your math block.
5. Keep Multiplication Fact FluencyPractice Fun!
Fact fluency takes practice—and lots of it.
But practice doesn’t have to be boring!

Make Multiplication Fact Fluency Practice Easy and Fun
